Old Books

Old Books, originally uploaded by glenelg.net.

I originally took this photo of an antique bookshop a couple of years ago on a visit to Brussels. The original was a JPG. I've never been able to come up with a version that I liked.

Today, I revisited it with Lightroom, playing with the split tone adjustments. I quite like this version.

Adobe Lightroom Windows Beta available

Finally, you can download the Windows beta of Lightroom here.

Project: Lightroom™ is Adobe’s effort to engage the professional photography community in a new way, giving you the opportunity to kick the tires and shape the feature set of a new tool being created just for you. Ultimately, we want Lightroom to be truly built from the ground up by photographers, for photographers, helping solve your unique workflow challenges.

Intital feelings are mixed positive. Functionally, it looks great with more tweaking adjustments than my existing software (Pixmantec Rawshooter). Operationally, however, it is slow and suffers memory bloat (I mean, 1/2 a Gig of RAM just to develop a single photo?) On importing a large number of files, Lightroom processes them as a background task, creating thumbnails etc. This can make the application appear sluggish at first (perhaps for several hours) and uses a huge amount of memory.

Of course I would expect performance and memory footprint to improve with subsequent betas and certainly before the final release.

Kitchen Chaos:

Kitchen Chaos: Welcome to Kitchen Chaos

After a bad kitchen day at the office (you know how it goes; coffee stains on the work top, empty kettles, coffee pots left to boil dry, food remains in the sink and a pristine, empty dishwasher) if created a new blog here called Kitchen Chaos.

The idea is that anyone who suffers from workplace kitchen atrocities can e-mail a photo and short description to me and I'll publish the best and worse to name and shame the worst offenders.

Good news from Pixmantec/Adobe

Good news for Pixmantec Rawshooter Professional users. The Pixmantec newsletter, here, states that subsequent to Adobe's acquisition of their technical assets:

Adobe will do the following:

Offer a free download version of Lightroom 1.0 for customers who bought RawShooter | premium prior to July 12th 2006, 12 noon European Standard Time. Given that Lightroom 1.0 will serve a much broader range of functionality and will be priced at a higher price point than RawShooter | premium, we believe this represents a great value for our customers.

Adobe will investigate to what extent your image corrections made within RawShooter can be transferred to Lightroom.

We will deliver support for Canon EOS 30D In RawShooter | essentials this summer.

Good news indeed. Now, if they could just get the Windows Beta of Lightroom out...

I'm a winner!

Starling : RSPB.org.uk

SPAM can be fun.

This one arrived today. Can anyone tell me what a Yatch is and why it needs a basin? Has anyone looked for UPON TYNE NEW CASTLE LONDON on Google Maps? Please, let me know where it is.

These are but trivial questions when compared to the rest of the message. I seem to have won a million lbs of Starlings. By my calculations, given that a Starling weighs between 2.5 and 3.5 ounces, that means I could soon be the proud owner of anything between 156,000 and 218,000 birds.

I wonder what I'll do with them...

Sadly, later in the email, I found that I have to contact my agent in South Africa to release my starlings. I'm not that stupid, of course I know that Starlings are non-migratory birds, they're never going to fly all the way to the UK!
